The Colorism Within Us: Celebrating Multi-Facted Filipino Identities

Image
When I was younger, I used to compare and contrast my skin tone to my sisters’ skin tones. My eldest sister had the lightest skin. My middle sister had the darkest skin. My skin was found somewhere in the middle. My eldest ate used cosmetics, like Eskinol, to keep a fairer complexion. We could only find these types of products at the local Filipino market or at Seafood City. My second eldest ate, who usually got negative comments on her darker complexion, refrained from using the products. Source: Belo Men Ad I wanted to try these products for myself, but was advised not to because of my young age. I had no idea what the products did. I had no idea why my family used them. I just knew that I wanted it. I wanted to look like my eldest sister so that people wouldn’t say that I wasn’t light enough. Filipinos, along with other brown Asians, have been contrasted to East Asians and their hyped stereotypes. Unfortunately, the popular ideology of colorism within the lar...

Who won the VP Debate? Moderator Elaine Quijano!

Image
Elaine Quijano wins Vice Presidential Debate Source: Twitter As @FiveThirtyEight tweeted, "VP debates don’t move the polls much even when they’re pretty good debates."  Since almost everyone agreed that last night's Vice Presidential Debate was not a very good one, who won? There were negative ratings of moderator Elaine Quijano , the CBSN anchor.  That was to be expected since you can't please everyone. "Sticking firmly to script, Elaine Quijano loses the debate." CNNMoney "Elaine Quijano cuts off the drama." Politico "The media jury is split on debate moderator Elaine Quijano." Filipina housewife Janice Buco wins 'Vietnam Idol’

Image
Filipina Janice Buco, under her stage name of Janice Phuong, wins Vietnam Idol Janice Buco charmed the Vietnamese audience with her rendition of “ Hello Vietnam ” in both Vietnamese and English in the show’s finale. The Filipina has lived in Vietnam for seven years and works as a professional singer in bars and clubs. The singing competition allowed foreigners to participate only this year for the show’s seventh season. From Inquirer.net: “I didn’t have an inkling that I would win. I thought I’d only end up in second place because I was a Filipino and not Vietnamese,” she said on Saturday. On the night of the finals on Friday in Ho Chi Minh City, she could not believe her ears when the host called her name as the victor, defeating a 22-year-old local. “Up to now, it still hasn’t sunk in. I couldn’t help crying when they announced that I won,” she said. She won 54.25 percent of the audiences’ votes with her powerful alto, taking home a cash prize of 600 million Vietnamese d...

Madison Bumgarner, who threw the final pitch of the 2014 postseason, is expected to throw the first of 2016 in Citi Field in New York. The Mets will start Noah Syndergaard, who held the Giants to two hits in eight shutout innings at AT&T Park on Aug. 21. In their other two meetings, both at Citi Field, the Giants beat him. Fantasy Football, Donald Trump & Janine Tugonon

Image
My fantasy football team is undefeated & in 1st place! NYoFace Football League Week 3 Standings Fantasy Football My team, the Jtown ReversePandas, is in first place in the NYoFace Football League .  NYoFace is no longer the $100-per-team expert league it once was where I kept track of player contracts, college draft picks, and league trades in spreadsheets.  It is now an auto-draft league.  Most owners, if not all, did not edit their pre-draft rankings.  One can say, the teams and the standings are by luck-of-the-draw. But hey first place is first place. ReversePandas btw is an anagram of my last name, with an added 's.' I'm not surprised Enteng Da Dragons and Shoog Knights are in 2nd and 3rd.  Vince and I haven't made any moves, but Ledge (Shoog Knights) leads the league in transactions. I hope I don't regret not picking up Carson Wentz in Week 1. I didn't get to change my roster this week so I get zero points from my tight end (which remin...
