DIASPORA MEMOIR • AUGUST 1976 August 19: The Day We Left the Philippines A nine-year-old boy, his Lola, and his sister walk across a Manila tarmac — toward Chicago, toward their parents, toward a new life. Fifty years later, the journey still shapes everything. Manila International Airport (MIA), August 19, 1976. Lola Rosita, Joy, and Jonjo — three generations, one tarmac, one leap of faith. Photo by Tito Sonny (Marciano Perseveranda Jr.), who had airport access through his work at PAGASA. Every August 19, I go back to that tarmac. I am nine years old. My Lola Rosita has our papers. My sister Joy is beside me, probably already calculating whether she would be carsick before we ever reached Chicago. And somewhere ahead of us is a Northwest Orient j...

125th Anniversary of Philippines Independence

Image
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the nationwide commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood in a flag raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Park Monument in the City of Manila. This year’s Independence Day commemoration centers on the theme, ‘Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.’  According to the NHCP, it ‘gives focus on the freedom that our forebearers struggled for towards the future that they dreamed for the country and the history that we seek to remember and honor them with.’ In a written statement, President Marcos Jr. conveyed that today’s occasion stands as a solid testament of the Filipino people’s constant display of solidarity in fighting for the nation’s freedom that transcends generations. “This historic day confirmed what our forebears have religiously kept in their hearts: that we are the inheritors of the glorious heroism and nobility that our ancestors have demonstrated throughout our long and storied history,” he ...

December 30 marks the 126th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal

Image
The 30th of December marks the anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal's execution in Bagumbayan, Manila, in 1896. Today, we commemorate his life and works as one of the nation's great heroes. I hope President Bongbong Marcos heeds his own words. President Bongbong Marcos tells Filipinos to 'reflect on the kind of life that we want to live' as the country commemorates the 126th anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom. #RizalDay https://t.co/CIipcBo7g4 — CNN Philippines (@cnnphilippines) December 30, 2022 Today, Dec. 30, 2022, we commemorate the Rizal Day. As we mark National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we honor the patriots who perished, commemorate the valor of all those who defended our nation, and recommit ourselves to carrying forth the ensuing peace and reconciliation that brought a better future for our world. pic.twitter.com/I12XoYnwCK — President Biden (@POTUS) December 7, 2021 #OTD every year, Pearl Harbor Survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Remembering cousin Edgar Allan Rivera

Image
Edgar Allan Rivera was my second cousin on my mom's paternal side, the Reyes side. Allan passed away seven years ago on March 2, 2014 at the tender age of 43.  This past November 16 should've been his 50th birthday.  Time sure flies. Tita Lita and my mom were first cousins.  But Allan, and his kuya Jun, were more like my brothers from another mother. NYOFACE Football, fantasy football, just isn't the same without you Allan.  Thinking of you and Jun.  Please take care of Tess, until we meet again.

Happy Anniversary Bernadette & Leonardo! | Aug. 30, 2002

Image
Flashback to 2002.  Queen of All Saints Basilica in Chicago, IL. Happy Anniversary Bernadette & Leo. Rest In Peace Jun! Missing you as always.  Missing you too Edgar Allan.  Fantasy football is just not the same without you. Is that Dino that I'm holding?  My nephew is now in Yale University in his senior year.  Time flies... Leonardo Jr. (Jun) and Edgar Allan are my second cousins on my mom's side.  I grew up with them when my family lived in Chicago until 1979. I moved back to Chicago in April 1989.  Jun, Allan and I watched and yelled in their basement when Michael Jordan hit The Shot  versus Craig Ehlo, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.  Thanks to Wikipedia, I now know it was May 7, 1989. Commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal

Image
Rizal National Monument, Rizal Park, Manila. December 30, 2016 I always loved it when my parents brought my sister and me to the Rizal National Monument when we were kids. Since Manila was a bit far from our home in Marikina, I'm guessing this was a side trip when we visited my mom's family in Malate. In any case, THANK YOU DR. JOSE RIZAL!
