Time to Change the Training | Russell Ellis | TEDxSUNYGeneseo "One of the most revealing and honest TED talks I've seen." -- Ike Berenguer Thank you Ike for sharing on Facebook where I saw it. Russell Ellis was raised in the mountains of North Carolina where racism was “so casual it was culture”. Now he is a “reformed racist” who aims to teach other white people how to deconstruct their own racism. Listen to this powerful speech in which he talks about his childhood, the cycle of white supremacy, and what white people can do to “BREAK THE CYCLE”! The dark history of the overthrow of Hawaii

Image
Get to know the story of Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii, and how she fought the US annexation of the islands. On January 16th, 1895, two men arrived at Liliʻuokalani’s door, arrested her, and imprisoned her. The Missionary Party had recently seized power and now confiscated her diaries, ransacked her house, and claimed her lands. Liliʻuokalani was Hawaii’s queen and she ruled through one of the most turbulent periods of its history. Sydney Iaukea shares how the ruler fought the annexation of Hawaii. Lesson by Sydney Iaukea, directed by Luísa M H Copetti, Hype CG.

"Why do people continue supporting Trump no matter what he does?"

Image
I copied this from a Facebook post . Forty-nine days until the election. Vote. Vote Blue! The question was posed, "Why do people continue supporting Trump no matter what he does?" A lady named Bev answered it this way: “You all don't get it. I live in Trump country, in the Ozarks in southern Missouri , one of the last places where the KKK still has a relatively strong established presence. They don't give a shit what he does. He's just something to rally around and hate liberals, that's it, period. He absolutely realizes that and plays it up. They love it. He knows they love it. The fact that people act like it's anything other than that proves to them that liberals are idiots, all the more reason for high fives all around. If you keep getting caught up in " why do they not realize this problem " and " how can they still back Trump after this scandal ," then you do not understand what the underlying motivating factor of ...

Doc Rivers sends an emotional message on social injustice | Black Lives Matter

Image
Why should Filipino-Americans support the Black Lives Matter movement? Because you can replace "Black lives" with " asian lives ," and " Native American lives ."  Back in the twentieth century, you could've replaced it with " Irish-American lives ," " Italian-American lives ," and even " Jewish-American lives ."  At one time or another, the Irish, the Italians, and the Jews were not considered " white ." Note the Caucasians who use hyphenated-Americans as ethnicity .  And note that no one says " English-Americans " or " German-Americans " or even " French-American ."  Think about it.  Even whiteness has different levels of white .  Tell me that's not a caste system.  That's white supremacy sh*t. And you know where sh*t belongs! #BlackLivesMatter Clippers head coach Doc Rivers talks to reporters after LA's 154-111 win over the Mavericks in Game 5. Doc River...

'Park Ranger Karen' tells Asian-American family they can't be in her country breaking laws

Image
We decided to take a family hike through a trail in the woods about an hour from our house. We brought our 11 pound Maltipoo with us. Along the hike, we saw several other hikers with their dogs. Everything was fun and friendly. People were saying "Hello" and practicing social distancing by letting others pass when we crossed paths. After a long hike, we were headed back down the mountain to our car. A lady and her husband were coming up the trail as we were going down. We stepped off to the side to let them pass. The husband passed, but the lady just stood there. So we continued walking. Our 11 year old daughter was in front with our dog on the leash. The lady aggressively stepped in front of our daughter and blocked her path. She began telling our daughter that we were breaking the law . My wife, who was behind our daughter asked what was going on, and the lady told us to turn around and go back to where we came from ...more strangeness then ensues. In the video, be...

The Colorism Within Us: Celebrating Multi-Facted Filipino Identities

Image
When I was younger, I used to compare and contrast my skin tone to my sisters’ skin tones. My eldest sister had the lightest skin. My middle sister had the darkest skin. My skin was found somewhere in the middle. My eldest ate used cosmetics, like Eskinol, to keep a fairer complexion. We could only find these types of products at the local Filipino market or at Seafood City. My second eldest ate, who usually got negative comments on her darker complexion, refrained from using the products. Source: Belo Men Ad I wanted to try these products for myself, but was advised not to because of my young age. I had no idea what the products did. I had no idea why my family used them. I just knew that I wanted it. I wanted to look like my eldest sister so that people wouldn’t say that I wasn’t light enough. Filipinos, along with other brown Asians, have been contrasted to East Asians and their hyped stereotypes. Unfortunately, the popular ideology of colorism within the lar...
