On January 16th, 1895, two men arrived at Liliʻuokalani’s door, arrested her, and imprisoned her. The Missionary Party had recently seized power and now confiscated her diaries, ransacked her house, and claimed her lands. Why should Filipino-Americans support the Black Lives Matter movement? Because you can replace "Black lives" with " asian lives ," and " Native American lives ."  Back in the twentieth century, you could've replaced it with " Irish-American lives ," " Italian-American lives ," and even " Jewish-American lives ."  At one time or another, the Irish, the Italians, and the Jews were not considered " white ." We decided to take a family hike through a trail in the woods about an hour from our house. We brought our 11 pound Maltipoo with us. Along the hike, we saw several other hikers with their dogs. Everything was fun and friendly. People were saying "Hello" and practicing social distancing by letting others pass when we crossed paths. After a long hike, we were headed back down the mountain to our car. A lady and her husband were coming up the trail as we were going down. We stepped off to the side to let them pass. The husband passed, but the lady just stood there. So we continued walking. Our 11 year old daughter was in front with our dog on the leash. The lady aggressively stepped in front of our daughter and blocked her path. She began telling our daughter that we were breaking the law . When I was younger, I used to compare and contrast my skin tone to my sisters’ skin tones. My eldest sister had the lightest skin. My middle sister had the darkest skin. My skin was found somewhere in the middle. My eldest ate used cosmetics, like Eskinol, to keep a fairer complexion. We could only find these types of products at the local Filipino market or at Seafood City. My second eldest ate, who usually got negative comments on her darker complexion, refrained from using the products.
