Six Flags Discovery Kingdom: 2016 Season Passes, Day One
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom: 2016 Season Passes, Day One
Jian, Nica and Chesca on a Sunday in Vallejo, four days before Ate Nica turned 15. An ordinary family day, kept on purpose.
Facebook Memories handed this one back to me today: October 4, 2015, a Sunday, at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo. Left to right, that's Jian, Nica and Chesca. My caption back then was short: "First time to use their 2016 season passes."
I can't find the original post anymore, so I'm moving the memory here, to the archive I keep. It was four days before Ate Nica's 15th birthday. It's an ordinary Sunday photo, and ordinary Sundays are exactly what an archive is for.
The park Jian, Nica and Chesca walked into began in 1968 as Marine World in Redwood City, opened its Vallejo site in 1986, and has been Six Flags Discovery Kingdom since 2007. Did you grow up on Marine World days in Vallejo?

Ate — AH-teh
The title for an older sister, and a respectful way to address an older female cousin or friend. In this frame it belongs to Nica, in the middle, the oldest of the three.
Four Days Before Fifteen
Ate Nica's 15th birthday was four days away when this was taken, which makes this her last week at fourteen. The caption only mentions the passes, but the date fills in the rest. It was the first day we used them, and Facebook Memories is the only reason I have the proof.
The Park Down the Road
When my family settled in Vallejo in 1979, this park was not here. Marine World opened its Vallejo site in 1986, the year after I graduated from Hogan, after starting out in 1968 in Redwood City. It took the Six Flags name in 1999, as Six Flags Marine World, and became Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in 2007. I arrived in Vallejo before the park did. By 2015, my kids were walking in with season passes.
Why a Theme Park Day Belongs Here
PinoyBuilt is a public guide for Filipinos everywhere, and it is also the archive Jian, Nica and Chesca will open someday to see what their dad noticed and refused to let go. History and policy get the headlines. A Sunday with three siblings and a pair of passes gets a place too. It's the same project: keeping what happened, in the order it happened, with the names attached.
