Ten years, two cousins, and a lifetime of heritage. Capturing the milestone 'double-digit' magic of Emmy’s birthday in Vallejo with a look at what family truly means.

There is a unique kind of magic in the quiet moments before a Filipino party truly begins. In Vallejo, just as the afternoon sun began to dip, we arrived as the first guests for Emmy’s 10th birthday. Before the house filled with the inevitable chorus of Titas, the scent of pancit, and the organized chaos of a milestone celebration, I had a rare window of stillness. It was the perfect opportunity to pull my Sony a7III from the bag and capture the day’s first light before the "double-digit" festivities officially took flight.

The 85mm Perspective: Finding Focus in the Early Moments

When you’re the first to arrive, you get to play with the light. For this shot, I reached for my 85mm f/1.8—a lens that essentially forces you to step back and observe from a distance. It is my favorite tool for isolating emotion, and it didn't disappoint.

In this frame, I chose to lock focus on my daughter, Chesca. At f/1.8, the depth of field is razor-thin; you can see the sharp clarity in her expression as she waits for the party to start. Meanwhile, the birthday girl herself, Emmy, drifts into a soft, creamy bokeh on the side. I love this composition because it captures the "supporting cast" of a milestone. A 10th birthday isn't just a celebration for one; it’s a shared experience for the cousins and siblings who are growing up alongside each other, framed in the beautiful compression that only a dedicated prime lens can provide.

What This Means for Filipino Americans

In our community, the 10th birthday—the "first double digits"—serves as a bridge between childhood play and the responsibilities of growing up. Watching Chesca and Emmy in this space reminded me of the resilience of our heritage; even in the changing landscape of Vallejo, these family bonds remain our constant north star.
