Half a Decade of Growth: A Senior Year Reflection

They say time moves differently when you’re watching your children grow. Five years ago today, I was mat-side at the 45th Mission San Jose Invitational, watching my son compete during his senior year at Benicia High School.

Looking at this photo now, I don't just see a wrestling match; I see a pivotal moment in his journey from a student-athlete to the man he is today. In the Filipino-American experience, we often talk about "building"—building a life, building a legacy, and building a future on this land. This match was a brick in that foundation.

To my son: Happy Belated Birthday.

Five years have passed since your senior year, but the grit you showed on that mat still defines you. As you continue to navigate your path on Turtle Island, never forget the discipline and heart you carried into that circle.

Wrestling is a metaphor for the diaspora experience.

It’s about finding your footing, staying grounded, and facing every challenge with a quiet, steady strength.
