Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI dies at 95 πŸ™πŸ½

Former Pope Benedict XVI died on Saturday at age 95. Born Joseph Alois Ratzinger, the German Cardinal who succeeded Pope John Paul II served as pope for eight years before stepping down, becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign his office.

 

“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican."


Pope Benedict XVI (Latin: Benedictus XVI; Italian: Benedetto XVI; German: Benedikt XVI.; born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, German: [ˈjoːzΙ›f Κ”aˈlɔʏzi̯ʊs ˈʁatsΙͺŋɐ]; 16 April 1927 – 31 December 2022) was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 19 April 2005 until his resignation on 28 February 2013. Benedict's election as pope occurred in the 2005 papal conclave that followed the death of Pope John Paul II. Benedict chose to be known by the title "pope emeritus" upon his resignation.
