The family of Angelo Quinto, a 30-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, is seeking justice and answers after he died following a confrontation with police in Antioch, California. The incident, which occurred while Quinto was experiencing a mental health crisis, has drawn comparisons to the death of George Floyd and sparked a wrongful death lawsuit against the police department.
A Call for Help Turns Fatal
On December 23, 2020, Quinto’s family called the police for assistance as he was suffering from a bout of depression and a mental health crisis. According to his mother, Cassandra Quinto-Collins, Angelo was calm by the time officers arrived. However, she alleges that instead of providing support, officers grabbed her son and threw him to the ground.
During the struggle, the family claims an officer placed a knee on the back of Quinto’s neck—a restraint technique the family’s attorney referred to as a "George Floyd hold"—for several minutes. Quinto reportedly pleaded with officers, saying, "Please don't kill me," at least twice before losing consciousness. He died in a hospital three days later.

Disturbing video footage released by the family shows the aftermath of the restraint, capturing his mother’s panic as she asks officers if her son still has a pulse. The family argues that the level of force used was entirely unnecessary for someone who was not being violent.
In response to the tragedy, the family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Antioch Police Department. They have also commissioned an independent autopsy, as authorities have yet to release an official cause of death.
Ongoing Investigations
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the case. As of the time of the report, the Antioch Police Department had not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident or the specific allegations of excessive force.
