Commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal

Image
Rizal National Monument, Rizal Park, Manila. December 30, 2016 I always loved it when my parents brought my sister and me to the Rizal National Monument when we were kids. Since Manila was a bit far from our home in Marikina, I'm guessing this was a side trip when we visited my mom's family in Malate. In any case, THANK YOU DR. JOSE RIZAL! The Spanish Speaking Asian and the Asian Looking Latino

Image
The Spanish Speaking Asian and the Asian Looking Latino By Tabitha Reyes | contributor "Then why is your last name Reyes?" — Navigating the "othering" of the Fil-Am experience and the complex search for belonging in the California diaspora. "Are you Chinese?" "No, I'm not." "So are you Mexican?" "Nope." "Then why is your last name 'Reyes'?" Throughout my childhood, I've been asked these questions. My basic response was to explain that the Philippines was once colonized by Spain. People would respond with an apologetic "Oh". Since I was small, I've had issues with the way that I racially identified, being that I mainly ethnically identified with my Filipinx heritage. The question of whether the Philippines was located in Asia or the Pacific Islands followed me constantly, but I never even thought about iden...

Downtown Chicago: Chicago & State - November 1986

Image
Flashback when I was 20 years old. Downtown Chicago at Chicago & State station after having shopped downtown. November 1986. This was near the end of my nine and a half weeks vacation.  Photo credit to Liza.  Happy birthday Liza! Who remembers Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks that was released in February 1986?! The movie that reminds me of 1986 and Chicago is actually About Last Night I must've watched 'About Last Night' with Demi Moore and Rob Lowe at least 20 times.  Yeah, I bought the soundtrack too in 1987 during my 6-month vacation in the Philippines.  So I've played that record a lot. So Far, So Good No way of knowin' where we're goin' No way of tellin' what we've got Love is attraction, calls for action like it or not We're no one-nighter, we're much righter I taste tomorrow in your kiss But I can't sell you, I won't tell you That we can't miss, I'll just say this So far so good We've been movin' right ...

Cubs' @Addison_Russell is having a historic #WorldSeries

Image
Addison Russell now has 9 RBI this series, the most by a player age 22 or under in a World Series. Addison Russell greeted Indians reliever Dan Otero in the third inning with a grand-slam home run, the first ever by a Cubs player in a World Series game. Russell became the second shortstop in major-league history to hit a grand slam in a postseason game, joining Brandon Crawford, who did so for the Giants in the Wild Card game in 2014 at Pittsburgh. At age 22, Russell is the second-youngest player to hit a grand slam in a postseason game; Mickey Mantle was 21 when he cleared the bases with a Game 5 clout in the 1953 World Series at Ebbets Field. Russell's third-inning clout was the 19th grand-slam home run hit in the World Series, and the first hit by a shortstop, which completes the circuit of defensive positions for players who have hit jackpot homers in the Series. Five World Series grand slams have been hit by first basemen, four by second basemen, one by a third baseman...

The Colorism Within Us: Celebrating Multi-Facted Filipino Identities

Image
When I was younger, I used to compare and contrast my skin tone to my sisters’ skin tones. My eldest sister had the lightest skin. My middle sister had the darkest skin. My skin was found somewhere in the middle. My eldest ate used cosmetics, like Eskinol, to keep a fairer complexion. We could only find these types of products at the local Filipino market or at Seafood City. My second eldest ate, who usually got negative comments on her darker complexion, refrained from using the products. Source: Belo Men Ad I wanted to try these products for myself, but was advised not to because of my young age. I had no idea what the products did. I had no idea why my family used them. I just knew that I wanted it. I wanted to look like my eldest sister so that people wouldn’t say that I wasn’t light enough. Filipinos, along with other brown Asians, have been contrasted to East Asians and their hyped stereotypes. Unfortunately, the popular ideology of colorism within the lar...
