Remembering Bruce Lee on the 50th Anniversary of his death Each year when July 20 comes around, I remember three things: Bruce Lee died in 1973; Man landed on the moon in 1969; It's Rudy Jandoc's birthday. Watsonville, California, was the scene to one of the worst Asian hate attacks on Filipinos in American history. For five days, from January 19 to 23, 1930, Filipinos fell victim to harassment, physical abuse, and theft by angry mobs of young white men who believed that the new migrants were stealing their jobs and women. June marks 40 years since the brutal death of Vincent Chin. The 27-year-old was beaten to death with a baseball bat by two men, who were fined $3,000 and received no jail time. His death sparked calls for justice and a national movement among Asian Americans. While hate crimes in this country increased last year by two percent overall, hate crimes against Americans of Asian and Pacific Island descent rose by 146 percent, with the Trump administration's use of racist rhetoric during the pandemic blamed by some for the rise in violence. History shows that Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have had to weather this wave of discrimination and scapegoating many times before. CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang reports.

Increasing hate crimes targeting Asian Americans are a silent symptom of the coronavirus pandemic.

There has been a troubling rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. Manjusha Kulkarni, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate and executive director of Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council joins CBSN, along with a freelance writer Andrew Wang who says the violence against his community has brought back some disturbing memories from the past.
