On August 19, 1976 , my sister and I left the Philippines. | JFR Perseveranda We loved our homeland—but under Ferdinand Marcos’s martial law, opportunity shrank and fear grew. My parents chose the uncertain promise of the United States over the certainty of repression back home. Nearly half a century later, on August 19, 2025 , I look at America and feel a familiar unease: the slow normalization of authoritarian habits, the kind my family fled. California Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye won't seek a second 12-year term

The California Supreme Court’s chief justice said Wednesday that she will not seek a second 12-year term in November and will conclude her current term of office on January 1. The announcement by Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye will give Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, his third opportunity to appoint a justice to the seven-member high court, and his first to pick a new chief justice. Cantil-Sakauye is of  mixed descent . Her  Hawaii -born father, Clarence, was of  Filipino  and  Portuguese  ancestry, while her mother, Mary Gorre, was Filipino. California's top Judge Tani Cantil-Sakauye announced she will step down in January after a 12-year term. Let's play!   Novak Djokovic defeated the defending champion Rafael Nadal in the final, 6–4, 6–1, 1–6, 6–3, to win the Gentlemen's Singles tennis title at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships. It was his first Wimbledon and third Grand Slam title, having previously won the 2008 and 2011 Australian Open.
