(Dec. 29) The  Wounded Knee Massacre , also known as the  Battle of Wounded Knee , was a domestic  massacre  of nearly three hundred  Lakota people  by soldiers of the  United States Army . It occurred on December 29, 1890,  near  Wounded Knee Creek  ( Lakota :  Čhaŋkpé Ópi Wakpála ) on the Lakota  Pine Ridge Indian Reservation  in the U.S. state of  South Dakota , following a botched attempt to disarm the Lakota camp. The previous day, a detachment of the  U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment  commanded by Major  Samuel M. Rest In Peace Coach Thompson Back when I knew everything about basketball (high school of course), Coach Thompson and his Georgetown Hoyas were all over ESPN . In the beginning of the 1981 NCAA Basketball season, James Worthy became my favorite player.  His jump hook became my go-to move throughout my playing days.  Coach Dean Smith became my favorite coach and the North Carolina Tar Heels became my team.  When a freshman Michael Jordan hit the game winning basket in the NCAA Championship Game at the end of that season's March Madness , I bled Tar Heel blue.
